Honest to God

A Series on Prayer

The motivation behind this summer series on prayer, Honest to God, is the ask of the disciples in Luke 11:1, “Jesus, teach us to pray.” In this series we are going to go all over the place by not only looking at various teachings and parables on prayer but by looking at a variety of prayers recorded in the Bible – prayers of grief, longing, lament, thanksgiving, intercession and so on. We will also look at some root causes for why we don’t pray as we would like.

Our hope at Midtown is that God would deepen our love and passion for prayer in the weeks ahead, that we would be a ministry known for prayer, and that we would no longer see prayer as another obligation but as the very air we breathe.

Ep. 01

Ep. 01

Luke 11:1-4

July 4, 2021

In this message we kick off a summer series on prayer and consider some causes for prayerlessness. We end by looking at what Jesus said is of greatest importance when we pray.

Ep. 02

Ep. 02

Luke 11:5-13

July 11, 2021

How we approach God is just as important as what we ask for. Do you approach God as your friend or? Also, in our text, Jesus is making a contrast to show us that God who is our Father is noting like the man in the text, and if the guy would get up and five his friend bread, how much more will your heavenly Father hear and give us what we plead for, no matter what time of the day or night you call. As Jesus taught us the way to pray, we should pray for these things as if He could not refuse us… Although He might and He has that prerogative.

Ep. 03

Luke 18:1-8

July 18, 2021

In this message we address the frequently asked question, "how do we keep on praying when God seems to be so uninterested and answers "no" so often?" Jesus addresses this very real issue head on in the parable of the persistent widow.

Ep. 04

Ep. 04

Acts 12:1-24

July 25, 2021

Acts 12 begins with the death of James and ends with the death of Herod and the word of God increasing. In between is the rescue of Peter from prison as the church prayed for him. In this message we look specifically at the ways the church prayed and what their prayer resulted in.

Ep. 05

Ep. 05

II Corinthians 12:1-10

August 1, 2021

What are you praying for right now, asking the Lord to take from you? I don't know if He will answer your specific prayer but He will answer; His answer may be unexpected but His grace will be sufficient. We all want revelations and visions, and they are gifts from God when they come, but so are thorns. Thorns reveal the sufficient grace of God.

Ep. 06

Ep. 06

Exodus 32:1-14

August 8, 2021

In this message in our series, Honest to God, we look at Moses' prayer of intercession for an idolatrous Israel. In it we will see the danger of impatience, how gifts become idols, the test of an angry God and the intercession of a mediator. An intercession that is to point us to Jesus and serve as an example in how to pray.

Ep. 07

Ep. 07

I Samuel 1:1-20

August 15, 2021

In this message we look at the sweet and anguishing prayer of Hannah, a prayer that stands out for its honesty and earnestness. We finish by seeing how God heard and “remembers” Hannah and how her prayer, humanly speaking, changed the course of history for God’s people.

Ep. 08

Ep. 08

Genesis 16:1-16

August 22, 2021

As important as knowing how to pray is knowing who we’re praying to. In this message we look at the story of Hagar, a woman ostracized but met by a God who saw her and came to her in her hurt.

Ep. 09

Ep. 09

Psalm 34

September 6, 2021

Thankfulness was David's response to God's rescue in Psalm 34. What can we learn from him? How should we respond to God's rescue of us?
